Emma Van Caenegem promoted to partner at ALTIUS
ALTIUS is delighted to announce Emma Van Caenegem’s promotion to partner in the Employment department. Over the years, Emma has become an essential member of the team, known for her expertise, dedication, and ability to navigate complex employment issues with speed, precision and care.
We have asked Emma to share some insights into her journey and what this new role means for her.
When did you start working at ALTIUS?
I joined ALTIUS in December 2016, after having worked several years for another Brussels law firm.
How did you start your career at ALTIUS?
I was approached by a recruiter but, if I remember well, I cancelled my interview! In the end, it was a university friend who convinced me to give ALTIUS a try, and a few weeks later we were working together in the same team.
What does this promotion mean to you?
It means a lot to me. Of course, it feels like a strong sign of recognition and trust. I am incredibly grateful for the mentorship, support and opportunities that I have received over the years, especially from Philippe De Wulf and Sven Demeulemeester.
But it is much more than that. I am very excited to take up the new challenges and responsibilities that come along with this promotion, together with our talented and engaged team members.
What has been key in building your career at ALTIUS?
Key has been the freedom to develop my own style in approaching clients and in developing sustainable client relationships. Clients appreciate if you take the time to really listen to them. If a client says they feel like we are an extension of their team, then I consider I’m accomplishing my mission in acting as a trusted legal adviser.
What are your professional goals going forward?
My focus is to continue strengthening our Employment practice, including helping foster a pleasant and positive work environment. Also, I will further boost the typical, no-nonsense, straight-to-the-point style that ALTIUS stands for when offering legal advice. Plus, of course, I will continue working very closely with all our clients to resolve their legal challenges.
According to Valérie Struye, ALTIUS’ General Manager, Emma personifies ALTIUS’ values:
“Emma‘s dedication to the firm and its clients has been clear from the start. She has not only made a difference in her field, she has also been a strong contributor in firmwide projects. Above all, Emma is a great person with strong values and I’m very proud and happy to see her developing and joining our Partner group!”
Philippe De Wulf and Sven Demeulemeester, partners in ALTIUS’ Employment department, see this as the natural and well-deserved next step in Emma’s career:
“Emma’s promotion is well-deserved given her hard work and exceptional contribution to our firm and our Employment team in particular. It shows that at ALTIUS talented people who are genuine team players, who ‘go the extra mile’ and are dedicated to our clients, progress through the ranks. With Emma becoming a partner, we are increasing the number of partners in our ever-growing team, and so are showing our team’s ambition to continue to rank among the top teams in Employment law in Belgium.”
Congratulations!

In Belgium, employers’ social security contributions have always been due on an employee’s full uncapped salary. Despite the grey legal area in which EoRs operate, their number has continued to grow in recent years. As there is no clear legal framework governing EoR activities in Belgium, the question arose how an EoR should position itself on the Belgian labour market: as a (heavily regulated) temporary work agency, or as a service provider offering HR solutions?
