Biotechnology is an increasingly important field in science and engineering, and has revolutionised the manner of diagnosing, treating and foreclosing diseases. It is one of those areas in which Belgium is traditionally an outperformer and is at the forefront of the biotechnology sector in Europe with a multitude of research centres and globally-renowned institutions.
In parallel with its experience in the life sciences field, our Life & Health team has been equally prominent in its legal support and representation of key players in the biotechnology field. The team has repeatedly advised on legal issues that are particular to the nature of biotechnology in terms of R&D, regulatory approval and good distribution and manufacturing practices. The team’s experience also includes risk-sharing reimbursement contracts with the Belgian government.
The Life & Health team has further acted on behalf of a number of companies responsible for groundbreaking biological products for the diagnosis or treatment of human diseases in terms of defending their invention and patent rights against biosimilar competition or other threats of infringement.
The Life & Health team actively participates in biotech industry and legal associations and conferences, and reports on a regular basis on recent changes and trends in the sector. At our annual Pharma Law Seminar (see Life Sciences) and Agri-Food Law Seminar (see Agri & Food), a fixed spot is reserved for discussing thought-provoking developments in the biotechnology field.
Through active membership in a number of Belgian and European-wide life sciences industry associations, and participation in industry leading conferences, the Life & Health team not only has an indispensable network but also keeps its ‘finger on the pulse’ regarding the latest scientific and regulatory developments. ‘Hot’ topics and legal updates are the subject of presentations and discussion by our Life & Health team specialists and external experts at the annual Pharma Law Seminar.
